Mauro, to put it bluntly, “had no choice”. Not only because his father put him on the stage when he was a little child alongside some of the best international musicians invited in Salento, but mostly because he soon realized blood and music were flowing through his veins. Being a musician was just inevitable.

At the early age of fourteen, Mauro Durante began playing the frame drums and the violin in the Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino. In 2007, he followed his father’s footsteps and took over the leadership of the band. (His mother, Rossella Pinto, was also one of the members that founded the CGS and she was part of the band until the keys were handed to the new generation).

Transmitting knowledge and experience like the father, Daniele, did with his son reflects perfectly the tradition to pass things on from generation to generation. In 2010, the first Canzoniere album produced by Mauro, Focu d’amore, came out, followed soon after in 2012 by Pizzica Indiavolata.

He has been taking part in the Notte della Taranta since 2000, performing duets with prominent musicians from all over the world, including Stewart Copeland, Trilok Gurtu, Richard Galliano and Zohar Fresco, and he shared the stage with all the most important artists that participated in this huge concert over the years.

In the 2010-11 edition of the Notte della Taranta, he was named musical assistant of the “Maestro Concertatore” Ludovico Einaudi at just 26-years of age. He worked on the conception and artistic production of the show with the famous composer.

This brilliant pianist and composer had already noticed Mauro’s lively talent back in 2009, and made him play in his album “Nightbook”. He also asked for his collaboration in his last International tour (Europe, Asia and USA) as violinist and percussionist, which gave him the opportunity to perform in some of the most prestigious theaters around the world (like the Royal Albert Hall of London just to name one).

In 2012 he was the musical assistant of the new Maestro Concertatore of the NdT Goran Bregovic.

He has developed his musical education by playing in concerts and studying ethnic music, violin and frame drums at the musical conservatory. He learned the rudiments of the frame drum techniques from his father, the experts that played for the band through the years, from the old generation and by participating in the traditional evenings in which people gathered in circle (ronda) playing the tamburo and danced in the middle. He kept studying in depth the various pizzica techniques and became one of leading figures.

He has been part of the important early music band Accordone, with which he took part in the main international festivals of early music (Europe, Middle East and Japan).

Besides, he can boast various collaboration with bands and musicians such as Piers Faccini, Ibrahim Maalouf, the Sud Sound System, Piers Faccini, Ballake Sissoko.

Mauro, per dirla bruscamente, è uno “che non ha avuto scelta”. E non solo perché suo padre Daniele Durante lo ha messo sul palco fin da ragazzino, affianco ai migliori musicisti internazionali venuti nel Salento, ma soprattutto perché presto ha scoperto che nelle sue vene scorreva sangue e musica. Diventare musicista è stato inevitabile.

Fin dall’età di 14 anni nel Canzoniere, ne diventa il leader nel 2007, succedendo al padre Daniele Durante (la madre, Rossella Pinto, è un altro dei membri fondatori del CGS ed è stata parte del gruppo fino al passaggio di consegne generazionale), ricalcando la prassi tradizionale di trasmettere saperi ed esperienze da generazione in generazione. Nel 2010 esce Focu d’amore, il primo cd del Canzoniere prodotto da Mauro, e nel 2012 Pizzica Indiavolata.
Apprende i primi rudimenti della tecnica del tamburo a cornice dal padre e dagli esperti tamburellisti che nel corso degli anni collaborano col gruppo, dall’incontro con gli anziani suonatori e dalla partecipazione alle ronde nelle feste tradizionali salentine. Approfondisce lo studio delle varie tecniche di esecuzione della pizzica salentina, divenendone uno dei massimi esponenti. Perfeziona la sua conoscenza dello strumento studiando al fianco dei migliori maestri di tamburi a cornice italiani e stranieri, tra cui Arnaldo Vacca, Zohar Fresco, Alfio Antico.
Porta a termine il Corso Triennale di Musica Popolare presso il Conservatorio di Lecce, frequentando i corsi di violino popolare e tamburi a cornice.
Partecipa dal 2000 alla Notte della Taranta, prendendo parte a tutti i concerti e gli eventi importanti che la coinvolgono, in Italia e all’estero (Europa, Cina, Medio Oriente); come al progetto della Pizzica Sinfonica ideato da Piero Milesi e alle tournée con l’ex batterista dei Police, Stewart Copeland, con cui si esibisce in numerosi duetti. Nell’ambito di questa importante manifestazione si trova a collaborare con numerosi musicisti di spicco nel panorama della musica internazionale, esibendosi in duo con Trilok Gurtu, Richard Galliano e Zohar Fresco, e dividendo il palco con tutti i grandi artisti che partecipano al Concertone nel corso degli anni.
A soli 25 anni viene nominato assistente musicale del maestro concertatore Ludovico Einaudi per l’edizione 2010 e 2011 della Notte della Taranta, lavorando all’ideazione e alla produzione artistica dello spettacolo al fianco del celebre maestro.
Il famoso pianista e compositore aveva già notato il vivace talento di Mauro nel 2009, facendolo suonare nel suo album “Nightbook” e chiamandolo a prendere parte alla sua ultima tournée interazionale (Europa e Stati Unti) come violinista e percussionista, portandolo ad esibirsi nei più prestigiosi teatri di tutto il mondo (es. la Royal Albert Hall di Londra).
Nel 2012 è assistente musicale del nuovo maestro concertatore della NdT Goran Bregovic.
Dal 2006 è musicista dell’importante gruppo di musica antica Accordone, con cui partecipa ai principali festival internazionali di musica antica (Europa, Medio Oriente, Giappone).
Vanta, inoltre, varie collaborazioni con gruppi e musicisti, tra cui Piers Faccini, Ibrahim Maalouf, Sud Sound System, Giancarlo Parisi, Ensemble di Terra d’Otranto.[:]
